As wedding season is officially in full effect, it is important to not only talk about the couple but also the guests as well. All wedding guests can be entertaining but none as much as Africans whose peculiar behaviors on the day make them some of the most notorious people to accompany you to celebrate your big day.
Below are five hilarious yet embarrassing things Africans do at weddings. Not only do they make you laugh but they cause you to scratch your head at whether we are truly normal.
Bring an untold number of uninvited number of guests with them
Most Africans have not been to an African wedding that isn’t overcrowded but this is precisely what makes it fun. You are sure to meet a childhood friend and a too distant aunt at any wedding you go to because someone is sure to invite someone who invites someone else. While this is usually fun for guests who get to have a mini-reunion, it can be a strain on an unsuspecting couple’s budget.
Take flowers and other decorations as wedding favors
Africans love good decor and often they end up helping themselves to decorations at weddings they have been invited to. You are sure to find an African aunt taking a wedding vase and flower with her to her car. An African wedding is truly a parting with everything you once owned, including a lot of what you bought for your wedding.
African parents are especially notorious for this – going on a full spousal hunt for their children at someone’s wedding instead of focusing on the event at hand. Although this gesture is really done out of love and concern, it is quite embarrassing as most African children would rather enjoy the wedding instead of being hooked up to all and sundry.
Take food home
Africans do make a ‘takeaway’ at every event they attend but this behavior is especially interesting at weddings because it is quite unnecessary. Since letting food go to waste is taboo in many African cultures, many Africans will request a to-go plate, some drinks and cake to accompany their meal home.
This might be the least hilarious on the list but worth noting nonetheless. Africans are notorious for going to weddings empty handed! Perhaps this is cultural but we’re sure that modern couples don’t appreciate it no matter its origins. But perhaps as long as couples understand the reality that they might not get as much at their weddings, they will budget accordingly when planning for the event.
