In celebration of World Friendship Day, we’ll be learning about some friendships that have stood the test of time – in show business.
We all know Hollywood or Hollyweird is a unique world that takes a lot of strength to be a member of. Nevertheless, the following have managed to conquer the lifestyle while gaining a best friend in tow.
Scroll through to learn about five celebrity friendships that started in childhood:
Will “Fresh Prince” Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff
The rapper/DJ duo met on West Philadelphia’s hip-hop scene in the 1980s.
They have sold more than 5.5 million albums in the United States and tunes like “Summertime,” “Parents Just Don’t Understand” and “Men in Black” still resonate with fans. Although they haven’t been active on the music scene together since 1997, they remain the best of friends.
2Pac Amaru Shakur and Jada Pinkett Smith
The controversial gangsta/intellectual rapper met the aspiring actress while they were both attending the Baltimore School for the Arts.
Pinkett said of their relationship, “Pac was the first one… that… it wasn’t about sex. It was about, ‘You? You’re a beautiful woman. You’re talented. You’re strong. I respect you and you are MY girl! You’re gonna sit right here and I’m gonna protect you! Imma make sure, if nothing else, you get what you need!’ And that’s what our relationship was like. We kind of did that for each other.”
2Pac was tragically shot while in Las Vegas, Nevada. He died from his gunshot wounds on September 13, 1996.
The two had a falling out and weren’t speaking when 2Pac died.
Pinkett iterated, “That was a huge loss in my life, because he was one of those people that I expected to be here,” “My upset is more anger. You know what I’m saying? Because I feel that he left me. And I know that’s not true, and it’s a very selfish way to think about it, but I really did believe that he was going to be here for the long run.”
Pinkett still gets teary-eyed when speaking about her beloved friend.
Sevyn Streeter and Chris Brown
Though she was advised to stay away from Chris Brown initially, Streeter didn’t heed the warnings.
She explained, “To hell with you,’ because at the end of the day, I’m not gonna judge somebody by what I read in a magazine or see on TV or their circumstance. “Let me gather and gain my own opinions and views according to my interaction with him.” “And, thank God I did [form my own relationship with him], because he’s just like you and me.”
Even though the two have had some transitions in their friendship due to evolving and challenges that arise in everyday life, they are still friends.
“We actually haven’t worked together in a very long time. It’s not something that I necessarily want, but I just think that he has a lot going on in his life. I love him and he loves me, that’s my brother — he will always be a brother to me — but it’s just a lot of different dynamics that I think were out of our control,” Streeter said.
Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King
Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King have been buddies ever since 1976 – when they worked at a Baltimore television station.
They’re so close, a good number of people have speculated that they are MORE than just pals.
Winfrey said, “I understand why people think we’re gay. There isn’t a definition in our culture for this kind of bond between women. So I get why people have to label it—how can you be this close without it being sexual? How else can you explain a level of intimacy where someone always loves you, always respects you, admires you?”
Their friendship has lasted a span of 40 years. That’s a top-notch relationship right there.
Tisha Campbell and Tichina Arnold
Tisha Campbell and Tichina Arnold have been pals since they were both youngsters growing up in Queens, New York and Newark, New Jersey, respectively.
They both appeared in Little Shop of Horrors and the popular show, Martin.
